In July 2011, the IFSC made its first venture into the area of adapted sport, by organising the first handisport world championships in its history. A competition that was the fruit of five years' work to adapt as well as possible the specificities of a climbing championship to handicapped competitors.
A bouldering competition consists of a series of short routes, called boulders. All boulders shall be climbed without ropes.
Lead competitions take place on artificial walls. The routes must have a minimum length of 15 meters.
Speed competitions normally consist of a qualification round and a final round. The routes are climbed on toprope.
